Fall Foliage Weddings in the Catskills: Everything You Need to Know

Venue Design

You want the hills turning gold behind you when you say your vows.

The catch? Leaves don’t take reservations.

A fall foliage wedding asks you to plan around something you can’t control. You pick a date many months out and hope the trees show up on time.

Here’s the good news. In the Catskills, peak color has historically landed in early to mid-October. Choose a date in that window, stay a little flexible, and let the landscape handle much of the decorating.

Who We Are

We’re The Barn on Hubbard, a restored 19th-century dairy barn on 28 acres in the Beechwoods of Callicoon, New York.

We help couples plan weddings that feel personal and relaxed. (October light through our old beams is hard to beat, though we may be biased.)

Why Are Fall Weddings in the Catskills So Popular?

Most couples choose a fall wedding in the Catskills for the color, the comfortable daytime weather, and the soft light for photos.

  • The backdrop is already there. Maples, oaks, and birches turn the hills red, orange, and yellow. You don’t have to build a focal point.
  • Days are often comfortable. Early fall afternoons can be pleasant for an outdoor ceremony. Evenings cool off.
  • The light is warmer. The sun sits lower in fall, so late-day photos take on a golden tone.

The tradeoff? Fall is a busy season for venues and vendors. The leaves are popular. So are the Saturdays.

When Does Fall Foliage Peak in the Catskills?

Fall foliage in the Catskills usually peaks in early to mid-October. That’s based on past seasons tracked by I LOVE NY, New York State’s official tourism site.

The color doesn’t arrive everywhere at once. According to I LOVE NY, it starts in the higher mountains and works its way down into the hills and valleys.

What Does That Mean for Callicoon?

The high summits tend to turn first. Lower hills and river valleys, like the Upper Delaware area around Callicoon, tend to follow.

Every year is a little different, though. Weather can shift peak earlier or later.

How Can You Track the Leaves?

I LOVE NY publishes a weekly fall foliage report during the season.

One note worth knowing: Eric Scheffel, who has managed that report, has explained that peak still includes some green leaves. (So a few green trees in your photos doesn’t mean you missed it.)

How Do You Choose a Wedding Date Around the Changing Leaves?

You can’t book peak color. You can improve your odds.

Compare Your Options

  • Late September: Warmer days and more green. Color may be just starting at your elevation.
  • Early to mid-October: Your best historical odds for a full fall foliage wedding. Also the busiest stretch.
  • Late October: Cooler, with more leaves on the ground and plenty of texture.

Ask Yourselves a Few Questions

  • Would we still love this date if the trees were half green?
  • Do we care more about peak color or warmer weather?
  • Is a Friday or Sunday worth considering if our Saturday is taken?

Check Your Sunset Time

Sunset comes earlier each week in October. Look up the exact time for your date on timeanddate.com before you set your ceremony time.

Plan your portraits for the hour before sunset, when the light is warmest.

Fall weekends tend to fill first. Reach out to check our fall availability.

Which Fall Wedding Colors, Flowers, and Decor Work With the Landscape?

Think golden, not gaudy. The trees are already doing a lot of the work.

Fall Wedding Colors

Pull your palette from what’s outside:

  • Rust, ochre, and deep red
  • Olive and moss green
  • Cream and warm brown

You don’t need every fall shade at once. Two or three colors is plenty.

And if you love navy or dusty blue, use them. You don’t need to ban anything.

Fall Wedding Flowers

Good fall choices include:

  • Dahlias, which can bloom until the first frost
  • Chrysanthemums (the garden varieties, not only the grocery store pot)
  • Amaranth and strawflower for texture
  • Ornamental grasses and seed pods for movement

An early frost can end the season for some local flowers. Ask your florist about a backup plan.

Before you commit to anything, ask: Would we still choose this if our wedding weren’t in October? If the answer is yes, it’s probably a keeper.

Fall Wedding Decor

This is where a light touch goes a long way. Our barn already brings aged wood, hand-milled beams, and Edison bulb chandeliers.

Start there, then add what feels like you. A few pumpkins are lovely. (Forty is a pumpkin patch.)

A few ideas that work well here:

  • Borrow from our vintage prop collection. It’s included with your rental, so you can style your day before buying anything new.
  • Glow with flameless candles. Cluster them on tables and along the bar for warm light that lasts all night.
  • Plan a send-off that fits the setting. Ribbon wands, bells, or a tunnel of guests all look great against the fall colors. We’re happy to help you choose.

What Should You Know About Fall Weather and an Indoor Backup Plan?

Fall weather in the Catskills can change quickly, so every outdoor part of your day needs an indoor plan. That’s true even when the long-range forecast looks perfect.

What Weather to Expect

Early fall often brings mild afternoons. Mornings and evenings get cooler as the season goes on. Rain can show up any week.

How to Build a Real Plan B

  • Set a decision time. Agree with your coordinator on when you’ll make the rain call.
  • Know your indoor ceremony spot. On rainy days, the barn’s big sliding doors make a lovely backdrop for your vows.
  • Tell guests to pack layers. Put it on your website.
  • Think about footwear. Grass and heels don’t always get along.

How Do You Turn a Fall Wedding Into a Full Weekend?

A weekend gives your guests time to enjoy the season.

Our packages for up to 100 guests and for 100 to 200 guests include the day before (starting at 11 a.m.), the wedding day (until 11 p.m.), and the day after (until noon). So setup doesn’t have to be rushed.

Think About How Guests Move Through the Day

Plan the flow with the light and temperature in mind:

  1. Hold your ceremony and cocktail hour outside while it’s still warm and bright.
  2. Move indoors as the air cools. The barn and our indoor silo bar keep things cozy.
  3. Let lantern-lit pathways guide guests once the sun goes down.

Give Guests Things to Do

  • Play horseshoes or cornhole on site.
  • Book a shuttle. We have parking for up to 70 cars, and a shuttle keeps everyone safe after the reception.
